Welcome! This marks the first official post! This blog is dedicated to examining the intertwining worlds of drugs and music throughout the past several decades. Specifically, my group intends to focus on how the use of drugs and the projection of drugs in the media has influenced the subject matter in mainstream music. As a group, we are finding that the constant exposure of drugs in the media often influences the current music of the time. Over the duration of this project, we hope to better research and understand the relationship between these two subjects.
I think my main concern, not necessarily question, regarding this project is striking a balance between research and interpretation. After collecting sources that will assist us in understanding our topic, we must analyze and put meaning to our research. I think that will be the greatest challenge in the project.
Perhaps one of the most prominent figures that successfully blended music and drugs together is Bob Marley. For the listening pleasure of the blog readers, here is a sample of Mr. Marley's work:
Sir It Up
I think that's an excellent concern to have. Thankfully, this project is more about learning about the process of collecting appropriate materials, creating citations, and presenting one's work that is necessary to successfully complete an excellent research project. Because of this, I want to make sure you feel less pressured about results and make sure you're really taking in the process itself.
ReplyDeleteBut that is an important balance you will have to strike, especially as you move on to other, more exciting and challenging projects. The great thing is, just being aware of this issue is half the battle, as well as realizing that the answer to that question (how do I strike the balance appropriately) is situational. It is different depending on your position (undergrad, grad student, scholar, researcher, policy analyst), what phenomenon you're trying to explain, and where your work will be presented and consumed.
I could philosophize on this topic all day on your blog, but let's talk about it in class as I don't think my philosophizing is really helping you get concrete answers. If you'd like to discuss it, just remind me in class tomorrow.
Nice blog!
